For the Christmas season this year I thought I would put together the 10 top reasons that our job is the best ever...
I think some people have just forgotten how much fun they are actually having.
Lets do this Letterman countdown style...
#10 - In most cases, I can wear jeans to work (sometimes shorts!) and still be called on to make important decisions every day.
#9 - You will eventually be able to create your "dream" game if you work hard and move up through the ranks. Hopefully it is a good idea, unlike that Sim Prison thing I pitched..
#8 - The people that are in this industry are some of the brightest, most creative and in some cases the weirdest/craziest people I know. I have always said you need to be a little crazy to be great at this game thing.
#7 - The work you do, especially in these tough times, brings joy to millions of people, especially when it is hard to find any in their own lives. AKA - Blowing stuff up in games is fun...
#6 - Get to live in a fantasy world (the game world that you are working on anyway) at least half of your day, every day.
#5 - Being able to watch an new idea in a meeting evolve, develop into a pitch, turn into a key feature list and eventually a game in just under 2 years.
#4 - The joy in seeing a good review of your game and the disaster of seeing a bad one... Imagine if no one paid any attention at all.
#3 - You ever see Office Space? That's totally us, except replace the stapler with a WiiMote.
#2 - The fact you get to see your product on the shelf, watch someone buy it at the store, or even talk about it to someone else in a positive light. This is something that a lot of us take for granted and is one of the best feelings you can have as a game maker.
#1 - My family disowned me for joining the industry back in 1992, instead of becoming a lawyer like I was supposed to.
They did eventually apologize :)....and I was never sorry for the choice I made.
PLEASE ADD YOUR FAVORITE REASON WHY THIS IS THE BEST INDUSTRY/JOB EVER!
Merry Christmas to all and remember to enjoy what you do a little more and you will be a lot happier in the long run...
